Let’s Make a Difference

Our local Nicaraguan community is home to some of the friendliest and most kind hearted individuals, but they are caught in the challenges of living in a developing nation where environmental education and basic goods are lacking. We care a lot for our neighbors, and our local environment, as we receive so much support and love from our community here at Amaru. Our aim is to inspire and collaborate with our guests to further develop our community programs in effort to make a positive and everlasting impact on our little fishing town and its future.

United, spider webs can tie-up a lion.

Our Local Projects

Baby Birds

Change start with the youth, and we aim to start early in shaping these beautiful little minds with the perspective of how much our tiny footprints impact both our local and global environment. We are making movements to integrate our programs into the local schools for weekly classes, where we can make learning about the environment fun and interactive.

Our main efforts include and project to include:

  • Environmental Education

  • Distribution of school supplies, toys, and books

  • Outdoor activities (hikes, tide-pooling, treasure hunts, sports and games )

  • Swim classes

  • English classes

We strongly encourage our guests to bring any donations down with them if they have extra space in their bag. Giving to those in need not only feels good, but also spreads the love and aloha that makes our community’s love continue

What your donations fund

  • Gasoline for picking up the rural local children to attend activities and workshops

  • Gasoline for field trips

  • Food and drinks for our activities

  • School supplies

  • Clothing and shoes

  • Sporting supplies for activities

  • Bathing suits, and goggles for swim classes

  • Help in supporting our local teachers who give their time

Turtle Rescue Project

Unfortunately Nicaragua has not realized the importance of one of the oceans keystone species, the Sea Turtle. Here in Nicaragua, the impoverished fishermen and farmers hunt the sea turtle eggs for both consumption and sale, putting a large strain on the remaining population of sea turtles. Not only are they beautiful animals, but they are incredibly important for the regulation of jellyfish and algae in the ecosystem. We partner up with local environmentalists and conservationists that have committed their lives to helping to protect these threatened animals. Our local turtle species include: Pacific Green Sea Turtle, Olive Ridley, Loggerhead, Hawksbill and Leatherback.

Join us in:

  • Buying poached sea turtle eggs

  • Releasing sea turtles into the wild

  • Building more turtle nurseries and nests for safe incubation

For guests that participate in our Turtle Release while staying here at Amaru we ask that you help donate around $10-20 to help us in our efforts to preserving our local turtle population.
